Welcome to the Kunene Region

One of the most undeveloped areas in the country of Namibia, the Kunene Region is located in the northeastern reaches of the country and is home to the Himba people. Although a small population, approximately 12000 strong, the Himba people are recognized for their abilities to adapt and survive in some of the harshest conditions to be found in Namibia. The Himba woman are very easily spotted, as they are often cover in an ochre and butter mixture that is spread over their skin, giving them the appearance of having "Red Skin". It is often said that the Himba people are traders, who make their living off the pottery, jewelry and leather works. It is believed that they will barter Sugar, coffee or tobacco, from any visitor, for the works, so make sure to be well stocked when visiting the area.

Because the Kunene Region is so undeveloped, it is an ideal area for the wildlife to flourish. The wildlife in the Kunene Region is really as diverse as the region itself. Most common amongst the animals to be spotted are the Elephants. The Animals roam free in the Kunene Region as has been done for centuries before, unhindered by man and his ever increasing need for development.

Luxury Hotels, guesthouses and bed and Breakfast, are very few if none existent in the Kunene Region. But what one will find are Safari Camps and Lodges. These camps will more often, than not, offer guided tours and safaris, whereby you will be able to view the beauty of the area and the wildlife there in.

Activities to be enjoyed in the Kunene Region include, game viewing, Quad biking, River boat cruises, bird watching and many more nature related activities.
